ASTRN 151 - Introduction to Astronomy Credit Hours: 4 Billable Contact Hours: 4 Prerequisites: RDG 090 , ENGL 090 and competency at the MATH 090 level MTA Natural Sciences Satisfier Y Session Cycle: FWSU
This course is designed as a non-mathematically-intensive introduction to Astronomy. Students will explore the appearance of the sky from the earth, the nature of light, telescopes, the formation, life and death of stars, the properties of galaxies -including our own Milky Way- the properties of the Universe as a whole and various cosmological principles, the properties and formation of our solar system, how life evolved on earth and the possibility of intelligent life in the Universe. Some day/evening outside observing may be required.

- Interpret our view of the sky from the earth.
- Describe the nature of light and various types of astronomical instruments.
- Outline the formation, life and death of stars.
- Compare and contrast the properties, formation and evolution of the various types of galaxies including our own Milky Way.
- Outline the properties of the Universe as a whole and various cosmological principles.
- Describe the properties and formation of our solar system including the contrast between inner and outer planets.
- Explain how life evolved on earth and the possibility of intelligent life in the Universe.
