A detailed study of invertebrate and vertebrate animals. Emphasis is placed on morphology and physiology, taxonomy, evolution, economics and ecology. Some of the more important cases under these topics will be discussed and explored. This course requires field work outside of the normal laboratory hours throughout the semester. Dissection of preserved animal specimens is required.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Achieve an understanding of how science and zoology influences our daily lives.
2. Describe how animals colonized land and evolved from colonial protozoa.
3. Achieve an understanding of animal structure and function.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the classification of each phylum, including subphylum, class and order. Common names of organisms for each division should be learned.
5. Describe the evolutionary relationships between phyla.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of life processes: external features, muscle, digestive, circulatory systems, respiration, excretion, reproduction, behavior, development, and ecology.
7. Identify and apply the major taxonomic animal groupings.
