This course includes a survey of the Civil War era in U.S. history, defined broadly from the Mexican American World to the lingering aspects and debates of the era in our modern world. Special emphasis is on economic modernization, slavery and race, the causes of the war, military aspects, reconstruction processes, and, importantly, the concept of historic memory surrounding our nation’s defining conflict. Ultimately, we learn not only about the Civil War, but how America chooses to remember it today in its art, culture, politics, and/or film and literature.
