SOC 251 - Modern Social Problems

This course looks at how social problems emerge and are addressed within society. While specific social problems, such as poverty, crime, racism, etc., are addressed within the course, this course offers students a broader understanding of the sociological phenomena surrounding social problems.

  1. Describe the difference between objective and subjective approaches to social problems.

  2. Recognize the individuals and organizations that contribute to the claimsmaking process.

  3. Differentiate between policymakers and social problems workers.

  5. Critique the claims used to raise awareness of a contemporary social problem.

  6. Analyze a social problem while citing peer-reviewed sociological research.
