Associate of Applied Science Degree
The associate of applied science degree with specialization in metrology and quality technology (precision measurement and quality) is designed to meet the precision measurement and quality needs of industry by preparing graduates through both theoretical and hands-on laboratory work to successfully enter the work force. Metrology and quality are used throughout the world in such areas as telecommunications, manufacturing, electrical power, aerospace, transportation, medicine, pharmaceuticals, food production, packaging, construction, national defense, atmospheric research and environmental protection. The metrology and quality technology program at MCCC emphasizes dimensional metrology and quality standards for the manufacturing industry.
Program Outcomes
A. Collect quality related data; then interpret measurement output and graphic data by use of SPC tools and the performance of Cp and Cpk analysis.
B. Summarize calibration results, and quality concepts, then communicate these to engineering customers and others.
C. Acquire and analyze measurement and other data using appropriate statistical methods to facilitate process analysis and improvement.
D. Develop, operate, and manage quality control systems, including management of resources and customer relations
E. Operate basic metrology equipment commonly used in a metrology facility comprised of dimensional, pressure, temperature, mass, torque, force, surface roughness, and other metrology measurement parameters.
F. Learn aspects of the maintenance of a calibration system, including proper calibration techniques for common measuring and test equipment used within a facility.
G. Program, set up and operate a CMM or similar, such as an articulating arm and make measurements of materials and parts.
H. Create and perform gage repeatability, reproducibility and correlation studies
I. Review quality auditing and the principles for meeting domestic and international standards (e.g. ISO/IEC 17025, NCSLI/ISO Z540.3, TS 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 9002, ISO 9003, ISO 14000, QS 9000).
Career Opportunities
Individuals with dimensional metrology skills, especially coordinate measuring machine (CMM) operators, are in high demand. MCCC is one of only a handful of colleges offering a program in dimensional metrology technology (one of only two in Michigan). Graduates of this program will be prepared for employment in the following areas:
- Calibration technician
- CMM (coordinate measuring machine) operator
- Inspection
- Lab technician
- Layout inspector
- Metrologist
- Metrology technician
- Quality assurance
- Quality auditor
- Quality control
- Quality manager
- Quality technician
