Paralegal, A.A.S.

Associate of Applied Science Degree 

The American Bar Association has defined paralegal as “a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.”  
It is the mission of the Paralegal program to provide students the core legal knowledge, critical thinking, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills which will enhance the student’s ability to function effectively in a legal environment and meet the standards of being a qualified paralegal.  Thus, the primary program goal is to educate students to become career paralegals who can perform effectively in a variety of legal settings and can adopt to changes in the legal environment and law practice.  The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes they need to become competent and ethical professional paralegals working in the delivery of legal services.

Graduates of this program will potentially be prepared for entry-level employment as:

  • Paralegal
  • Legal Assistant
  • Document Control Specialist
  • Legal Transcriptionist
  • Legal Researcher
  • Law Librarian
  • Claims Examiner/Adjuster

Transfer Information

Although this program is a two-year occupational program designed to prepare students for employment, many four-year colleges and universities will accept much of this curriculum in transfer.  For information regarding transfer opportunities for this or any program, please visit the Transfer section of the MCCC website.

Additional Degree Requirements

  1. At least nine credit hours of LAW prefix courses must be taken through synchronous instruction.
  2. Students may be eligible to complete COOP 297  - Internship (1 credit), COOP 298  - Internship (2 credits), or COOP 299  - Internship (3 credits) as an elective of the program. Students may only complete one of these COOP courses in this degree.
